HELIUM An element with two protons and two neutrons in its nucleus, a cloud of electrons that keep it happy keep it from joining with other elements. It is stable and enjoys its own company. This painting is about the aliveness we can enjoy in our own company. Lively and full of colour we are at out best when we are content in our own duality knowing that is is part of a bigger non duality.

Out of a bubbling foam of creativity, the seeds are fertilised and grow, buds open. New elements blow in from the sea to nourish and define the growing forms. Entering a mood of listening and feeling as I paint the gentle caress of the brush on the canvas is sensual and soft and speaks to something divine and feminine. The shapes are reminiscent of petals and buds but also of a vulva, a vagina, opening to the cosmic, masculine. Not to be invaded or overtaken but to be fertilised for the creation of new life.

The mistral helps explain the unusually sunny climate clarity of the air of Provence. When other parts of France have clouds and storms, Provence is rarely affected for long, since the mistral quickly clears the sky. In less than two hours, the sky can change from completely covered to completely clear. The mistral also blows away the dust, and makes the air particularly clear, so that during the mistral it is possible to see mountain, ninety three miles and farther away. This clarity of the air and light is one of the features that attracted many French impressionist and post-impressionist artists to the South of France. (wiki)
Strontium 90 Oil on Canvas 126 x 76 cm
The title Strontium 90 refers to the element Sr-90 which “generates heat as it decays, it is used as a power source for space vehicles, it may also be used controlled manner, to treat bone tumors” (wiki). Working with fluidity and listening to the internal drama as well as the voice of the paint itself, this painting speaks about of the difficulty of surrender, how there is ‘good’ inside the apparent ‘bad’ and visa versa. It speaks to the fierce need to break free and break rules and the impossibility of this, how our need for relationship keeps us playing the games.
