I am delighted to announce my upcoming exhibition opening in Hawick this Spring.  I have a strong connection with Hawick through the Chisholme Institute and was delighted to accept the invitation to exhibit in the Cornucopia Gallery and cultural space.  The gallery space has been recently taken under the wing of Stuart Delves, poet and playwright of "The Real Lady Macbeth".  The exhibition will bring together a body of work more than four years in the making.

My practice of painting is to do with the presence of the spirit in the ordinary world, what cannot be seen, but can be intimately intuited on the cusp of what is both present and absent. The title of this exhibition is from a seventeenth century natural philosopher Joseph Glanville.  At that time there was a great unfolding of ideas, which laid down the foundations for modern science, while being equally concerned by theological questions regarding the nature of God.  In my view the fragile knowledge that we apply to the global changes we are encountering, can only be made sufficient through a greater knowledge of God, not as theological debate but as an experience of unity and interdependence.

Painting itself is a game, playing with verisimilitude through encountering the magic of paint itself: its enthralling viscosity, its mutability that brings the eye and the hand into submission to its order. I once believed I was the one in charge but this is not the true state of affairs.  In my practice paint stands in as a servant of the Divine, who has been sent to help me ‘see’ - it teaches me as I paint. It is the vehicle for colour and light, in this way my still life paintings intend to offer a counterpoint to the restless agitation of the mind.
