My work with flowers and Still Lives is an active exploration into the means by which the hidden interior of things, can be felt through gestures made in paint. It.allows me to explore things in detail and with an ‘adoring’ eye. To pay homage to the ‘eye’, to ‘seeing’ to the glory of colour and the play of abstraction within the world of forms.

The Ordinary

Little Pine Cone with Lace

This little painting explores painting on the frame so that the painting moves from 2d to 3d and becomes an object as well as a representation.

Seeds have Flown or Pine Cones with Lace

This painting is about rhythm and patterns, the mysterious continuity and interconnectedness of sameness and difference. Every part of the pine cone is distinct from the others and yet folds perfectly into it it to make a unified pine cone. The lace coverers the red paper and in being seen they become one. The folds of the white fabrics make distinct shadows but it is in fact one material.

Yellow Silk

I love the sensuality of painting fabric. This small painting is oil on gesso board, mounted onto an old frame. I wanted the fabric to spill out beyond the surface, onto the frame. I am considering framing it again and working into it with free style flowing gestural strokes.

Secrets in Yellow Silk

This large scale painting combines my passion for the sensuality of painted fabric with the more raw and elemental aspects of poured paint. I wanted there to be a feeling that the raw elements of abstract poured paint to push through the painting of drapery I love the boundaries where different ways of painting meet.. Alison Watt, the scottish painter who I admire describes these blurred edges :

" begins to suggest other things to me and becomes a boundary between abstraction and figuration. I've always found it very evocative and suggestive of the human presence. I think white fabric, in particular, has quite a hold on the imagination." Alison Watt

Yellow in Memory of You

I approached a neighbour on my street, who had a rose tree in her front garden. I asked her if she could spare me some of her beautiful roses. They didn’t live long once cut, the petals quickly drooped and fell as I worked. I captured their parting moments. I painted this intense ground of two yellows with the the brevity and preciousness of life in mind, the tragedy of suicide and the sorrow of death.

Trumpets Over Head

Wishing for real roses to paint, I stepped out of my front door to find my neighbour, happy with her secateurs, cutting away at a gigantic rose bush that was apparently pulling the building down. I stood puzzling as she shoved the cuttings into a large plastic bag. “Are you throwing those away?” So there it was; a gift with some thorns with which I battled with two dogs on the bus to my studio. Juiced up and rearing to go I put on John Adams; Harmonielehre. So trumpets overhead came into this dimension.

Valentine’s Sunset

you know the kind, just dazzling

with the street lamps shining all white and innocent

against shimmering Prussian blue, twilight fading

into the passion of violet and red into orange

the colours of burning hearts

the colours of these roses.

Wild Nights

John Adam’s “wild nights” incredible music. Being and passionate loving is one of life’s most glorious experiences. Roses are that expression, naturally.

Easter

A cloth with a Maltese cross lace, the vibrant colours behind, making their presence felt and the thorns and orange berries of the buckthorn. Thorns and purity and veils covering something that is vibrant, to me this felt like Easter, the possibility of stillness and joy in hard times.

Jazzy Peonies

I painted some stocks and peonies but I didn’t feel a need for a composition, I tried to find one and it didn’t appear, i added black and gold and started to play with colour, shapes and lines, edges are everywhere, I found a frame and before I knew it the paint had made itself vivid across the frame. A little gold moulding from the original frame gives tension and composure to the final piece.

Roses for Moni

In our times of abundance these everyday roses cost the same as cup of coffee. Who grew them who picked and packed them I will never know. As they sat on my kitchen table they grew in splendour and power and they asked to be painted.

Night Flight

The intoxicating delicacy of hydrangeas contrasted with the luminous pink of a rose and the robust golden shapes of autumnal leaves held me captive for weeks. Night flight speaks to the energy that moves and shapes realty, especially at night.

Playful and colourful, I painted these flowers wet onto wet and allowed the composition to extend out into the frame.

Peony with Poured Paint

PAinted in 1993 before children, when I lived in Hackney. This painting has always been the key to my work. Brought me back to painting flowers and keeps the materiality of paint, foremost in my mind.

Elements of Form

The shapes paint can make, like consciousness, is my abiding passion, to explore this with all the variety of colour and texture is my delight.

Roses Obscured

White Roses, obscure and drowned out by the bold yellow vase that sits below them a square of strong impasto yellow oil paint. They are also obscured but billowing clouds of white and yellow paint. An idiosyncratic painting a poem on the possibilities of paint.
